Saram & Namu (사람과 나무, Human & Tree)
Fusion Korean food in Insadong
Saram & Namu (사람과 나무) is another restaurant that I came across in Insadong which looks charming from the outside. It’s housed in a Hanok (Korean traditional house). Have a look at the interior here. According to the official Korean Tourism website, this restaurant serves Korean fusion food and it gained recognition as one of the favorite restaurants of Coach Guus Hiddink, who brought the Korean football team to the semi-finals in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. hmm…
Btw. Lunch special is priced at 7,000 won.

Sanchon (山村산촌)
Buddhist temple food in Insadong
I discovered this restaurant while exploring the back lanes of Insadong. It’s such a charming looking place yah! Can you see the lotus lamp in the restaurant? it’s so lovely :) I really love the ambiance of the restaurant and stood there for a while peeping through the huge glass window :p
Anyway, I googled a bit and found out that Sanchon offers Buddhist temple food so it is entirely vegetarian. And the owner of this restaurant is a former monk! :) They offer jeongsik (set meal) consisting of over 20 side dishes, including soup, tofu, vegetable pancakes, and various cooked herbs and vegetables, potatoes and of course kimchi. Their set menu changes from time to time. Lunch set meal is 30,000 won and dinner is 59,400. Quite pricy…I’m not sure if all temple foods are so expensive. Btw. You can have a look at their menu here >
According to their official website, Sanchon also features Seungmu (Buddhist dance) and Bara dance performance every night from 8pm to 8:45pm to introduce the temple culture to customers.
Sounds like a nice place to dine in but it’s too pricy for me… 30,000 won. I can have 6 meals (5,000 won x 6) with the money.

Chilgabsan 칠갑산
Korean restaurant in Insadong, Seoul
I was in Insadong near lunch time and was looking for a nice place to eat which will not burn my wallet. So I went to the tourist information center and asked if there’s any restaurant that offers lunch which is lower or around 5,000 won. The staff there was very helpful and recommended me a few. I decided on the one that offers bulgogi lunch at 6,000 won. I don’t know why but I seem to crave for meat on that day. Btw. Their Kimchi Jigae (김치찌개) & Bibimbap (비빔밥) is 5,000 Won.
Anyway, Chilgabsan 칠갑산, tucked in one of the narrow alleys in Insadong is a very authentic Korean restaurant. I’m glad that I decided on this place. I was tempted to order their grilled fish instead of bulgogi but stick to meat instead. They are very generous with their banchan and it’s so yummy. I would come back to this place just to eat their yummilicous banchan. lol. I tried to finished all the banchan they served me but couldn’t…too much really…it was such a waste really. I think this is the first time I felt that banchan is more delicious than the main meal. I’m not trying to say that their bulgogi was not good but seriously their banchan won my heart. Hilarious yah.
You know what. I like their food so much that I went back there for dinner on the same day with a friend. lol
Both of us ordered grilled fish set. Sorry for the blurry photo but the fish was delicious! Am I making all of you hungry again :p
Check out my friend, Zarina’s blog for direction to Chilbagsan.
